Math: Data and Statistics

Our focus in math has been on data and statistics.  We've learned how to read and analyze data when it's presented in a variety of formats.  Mrs. Hersey gave us a challenge to use our math skills to conduct a survey on all the fourth grade students on a topic of our choice.  Some of our survey questions were about favorite flavors of ice cream, teams, types of sports, cars, wild animals and colors.  We then had to create four different formats to show that data: bar graph, pictograph, tally chart and pie graph.  We learned about percentage and then used our computers to create the pie graphs to show percentage.

Finally, we created posters to display our data and also created questions for others to answer using our data.    The final unit test was for each student to answer all the questions on each poster created by a peer.  Students acted as teachers and corrected classmates answers and then helped individuals correct any errors.  It has been a good project to apply all the new skills in math we've learned.
