Reading: Historical Fiction Genre

posted Mar 29, 2012, 9:16 AM by Sue Hersey
We've been reading the historical fiction book, Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare.  It is a Newbery Award novel, set in  1768 on the Penobscot River of Maine. We have been learning about two cultures: the Native Americans and the Early Settlers of Maine.  Mrs. Hersey gave us the challenge of creating a miniature replica of the settings in this book of Attean's Village and Matt's cabin and surrounding areas.  We split into two different groups to create the replica and then presented to our classmates.  When presenting, we pointed out objects in the replica and then read passages from the book that justified placing that object. It was a fun challenge and a way to review for the novel test.  It was also a great connection to our Social Studies focus of Maine Geography.  Be sure to look at it carefully during student-led conference time.
