Science: Life Cycle of the Salmon

posted Mar 6, 2013, 11:51 AM by Sue Hersey
Today we had a guest speaker, Charlie Kelly from Fish Friends.  He taught us about the life cycle of the salmon and brought about 200 salmon eggs that will be in an aquarium in Mrs. Gaston's room.  All fourth graders will be learning about the life cycle and  will be doing observations as the salmon eggs change and go through the eyed stage, alevin and fry stage of their life cycle.  We will need to keep track of the temperature in the aquarium each day.  When the salmon reach the fry stage we will be releasing them into the Union River before the end of the school year.  We are part of the Fish Friends Program which supports helping this endangered fish in Maine.

When we observed the eggs, we saw the eye, spine and in some cases the heart.  The eggs even moved a tiny beat as the hearts were beating.  Amazing!!!
