As part of our social studies curriculum, we've been studying the early life of Native Americans in Maine.  We took a trip to the Abbe Museum to learn about basket-making in the past and in the present.  We learned about the type of materials used to make baskets: birch bark and ash.

We also looked at all the exhibits displaying antique and modern baskets made by Passamaquoddy and Penobsot Indians.  Lastly, we closely observed baskets to learn about different types of weaves, and coloring to determine the use of the baskets, and to determine if they were made in the past or more recently.  All of the baskets were just amazing to look at.
