Social Studies: Field Trip to Abbe Museum

posted May 10, 2012, 12:11 PM by Sue Hersey
As part of our social studies focus on Maine Native Americans, we took a field trip to the Abbe Museum.  Mrs. Ann Stocking was our guide and she taught so much about basket making in the past and in the present.  We learned how the wood from an Ash tree is prepared to make baskets.  We learned about different uses for baskets and the different patterns for weaving. We had time to look at the new exhibit called Native Americans and Rusticators which told a lot of the history of the Wabenakis on Mount Desert Island years ago.  Next, we got to look at some specimens of baskets and answer questions about them.  It was so much fun and there is so much to learn at the Abbe Museum.
