Reading:  Historical Fiction Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare

This historical fiction novel is set in Maine.  Besides understanding what life was like in Maine during the 1700s, we were also comparing the Early Settlers and Native American Cultures, which is part of our Social Studies curriculum.  Because this is a controversial book, we also learned to become critical readers and be aware of stereotypes in literature.  As an ending project, we created a model of Matt's cabin and surrounding area with many details mentioned in this book depicting life then.  We also created a model of Attean's village.  We worked in two separate groups and each group explained its model and read passages from the book that justified placing specific objects in the model.  The details in each model are very impressive.
